Cliffs of Moher...! I have been waiting for this moment since the beginning of the class. This is one of the most beautiful places in the world. It proved once again that the nature is the best artist, architect, sculpture, and a painter. I was so mesmerized that I could sit down on one spot and just stare into the beauty of the scenery, cliffs, and the ocean without being conscious about the time. I couldn't believe that I was in such a beautiful and attractive place! I wish I could put everything I saw into my camera, but at least I can get some good photos... Cattles were right next to us; they were so cute! This place is definitely a must-come-back!
A 2-hour bus ride from where we are staying, it's located on the west coast of Ireland, in county Clare just south from the Village of Doolin and the Burren, Boireann in Irish meaning "great rock” which is a karst-landscape region in northwest County Clare, in Ireland, and the region measures approximately 250 square kilometers . From Doolin, the cliffs ascend to over 700 feet stretching south for nearly five miles to Hags head, name given to the most southerly point of the Cliffs of Moher. The Cliffs of Moher were the original site for a gigantic river delta and were formed about 320 million years ago during the Carboniferous period, which lasted from about 359.2 to 299 million years ago. The Napoleonic signal tower at Hags Head was built in 1803, and this is close to the site of a long gone 1st century BC ruined fort “Mothar” from which the Cliffs get their name. The cliffs reach their highest point near O'Brien's Tower.
O'Brien's Tower was built in 1835 by Cornelius O'Brien who is a descendant of Brian Boru, Kings of Thomond. The purpose of the tower was for the hundreds of tourists as an observation point because even then, it was a popular touristic place with lots of visitors. The tower stands on a headland of the Cliffs of Moher. Cornelius looked ahead and thought about the future because he believed that the development of tourism would benefit the local economy and bring people out of poverty. He also built a wall of Moher flagstones along the Cliffs; according to the locality, he built everything around here except the Cliffs. He died in 1857 and his remains lie in the O'Brien vault in the graveyard adjoining St. Brigid's Well.
O'Brien's Tower and the Cliffs of Moher are located a short distance from the village Doolin that is famous for its traditional music. Doolin is a small village that is located on the west coast of Ireland in county Clare; it is situated 8km from the famous cliffs of Moher and 70km from Galway City. Traditionally a fishing village, Doolin is now renowned world-wide as the traditional music capital of Ireland. One of Doolin's most famous sons was Micho Russell, a world-renown whistle player.
