Three-Course Meal is here oh yeah!
Fancy dinner with a group who is also from Denver, Colorado? What a great way to end our trip for Dublin! We went to a place called Gallagher's Boxty House in the Temple Bar area. It was a three-course meal, which was 25 euro, including the appetizer, main course, and the dessert. Of course, it took about zero second to choose my dessert because I saw the word "chocolate" and this usually means yes. For my main course, I got chicken wrapped in Boxty pancake. It was delicious, and the combination, despite the fact that it's not common in the U.S. was very palatable. It was a good experience to finally get to try the real Irish traditional food. Wait a minute, then what is Boxty?
Boxty is a traditional Irish potato dish that is particularly associated with Leitrim and Cavan, which are counties in Ireland. It is made with potatoes, flour and milk; it's basically a fried potato pancake. It can be eaten by itself, with some meat being wrapped by it, with some side dishes, etc. Irish people ate many types of potato dishes, including colcannon, potato bread and potato apple-cakes.
Irish diet is centered on potato, and this has started ever since 18th century. Also, for a long time, poor people's only source of food was potato to survive. During the Great Famine (1847-1849), a blight destroyed the potato crop, leaving many Irish people with no food; over 1.1 million people died and 1 million emigrated. Despite the availability of many other foods in Ireland today, potato still remains as the main diet for Irish people.
